Merp.com 7.0 Request For Comments before beginning development.

Before we do upgrade the site, it would be nice to get feedback from users on what they feel has been an improvement, and what they feel is missing and needs to be considered in the major (7.0) version of the site. We currently have more than 5,000 registered users (down from a peak of 20,000 a few years ago), if even just 1/100th helped, the site will rapidly progress. So please let your voice per heard and comment before the development begins.

We are getting ready for the next major overhaul of merp.com
The current site has been loosely referred to as version 6.0 (with the first version being back in 1998.

6.0 has had many improvements and additions, but also unfortunately many unfinished pieces. The site is showing it's age. We have been on this base of software (zope-plone-2.x, with many incremental upgrades) since 2004, and its starting to slow things down. The zope-plone community is now int he 3.1x (and nearing 3.2) range. We've run some other sites on 3.1 for about a year now, and have enough comfort to start moving merp.com (the largest).

Also, if you are interested in a particular portion of the site, this is a great time for you to offer to volunteer. We can set you up with administrative/editorial permissions in specific parts of the site (wiki, forum, news, chat, downloads, the list goes on), if you are interested, please email off list to webmaster at merp dot com, and we will set you.

One of the purposes of 7.0 is to clean out the dead links, and other areas that have fallen by the wayside due to volunteers no longer assisting in those areas. So the early stages of 7.0 will be notably leaner than the currently huge 6.x site, but will make it easier to add to rapidly, as long as the community helps as it has in the past.

We currently have around 5,000 registered users (down from a peak of almost 20,000 just a few years ago), even if only 1/100th of you stepped up to help for 15-30 minutes a month, the site would rapidly progress.

We look forward to everyone's feedback.
Thanks for all your support of merp.com since 1998.
Cheers!
Merp.com volunteer team.
