I loved The One Ring, but have found that FATE Core works even better. It’s really easy to capture Tolkien’s flavour with the Aspects mechanic, it has been the best system for us!

merp's percentile system meant i was happy to extemporise when players decided their characters were going to do something - anything - no-one in their right mind would, pretty much from the third session of the first game i gmmed. the "thinks frantically, how on earth - or in middle-earth - do i handle *that* ?" was finished and ready with "what's the best that can happen for them, what's the worst that can happen in the circumstances, ok, that's 0-to-100 (or up-to-10, less roll again, to up-to-95, plus roll again) with roll for any appropriate critical" by the time i'd said "ok, roll; have you any applicable bonuses?; and their 2d10s stopped rolling.
it may've helped that i rarely _required_ combat - not unless characters were put into situations by their players, and failed to flannel their way out of the confrontation - but the immense flexibility of the system meant i was free to encourage players to concentrate on roleplaying their characters, rather than try and play the system like " knights of the dinner-table".

i need to get little grey ghost back on the road, before i can think about starting running another game, though
